Wow, this seems to be an area where we could use some new titles. I just thought that when I was stumped on what to recommend to my 7th grade teachers it was because I am a first year librarian. I immediately thought of All Quiet on the Western Front, which is an incredible book, but I feel it may be better appreciated by an older audience (I did suggest they use it for the Talented and Gifted group). From all the responses, and my own research, here are the titles for fiction set in/around World War I: Good-bye Billy Radish by Gloria Skurzynski After the Dancing Days by Margart Rostkowski Rilla of Ingleside by L.M. Montgomery War Horse by Michael Morpurgo American Front by Harry Turtledove These titles have all been around for a while, and I believe that the last two are out of print. I know that WWI isn't quite as 'popular' (for lack of a better term) in curricula as WWII, but I can't get over the lack of appropriate novels for middle schoolers in this area...guess we should all spend the summer writing YA historical fiction. Thanks to all who shared ideas. -- Jill Hofmockel Library Media Specialist Norwalk Middle School Norwalk, IA 50211 (515)981-0435 nmsmedia@uswest.net =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
