I received several old Braille books that had been stored in someone's
garage and smelled musty and mildewey, even though no visible mildewing was
present. I wanted to use them in a lesson on Louis Braille, so I decided to
experiment with one of them. I went through it page by page and sprayed
each page with Febreeze (that deoderizer in a trigger spray.) Then I just
let the book stand overnight on its side with the pages a little separated.
Worked like a charm. Didn't damage the pages or destroy the braille bumps
and it smells fine. Use this with caution, since in my experiment there was
no print to be smeared, but it looks like a winner. I didn't soak the
pages, just sprayed them lightly.
