Hi, folks. I'm the new technology editor at School Library Journal, and we have a job opening for an editor for our Web site, SLJ Online. We want someone with school or public library background who is passionate about using the Web as a communication tool. The job is in SLJ's offices in New York City, so you must live near NYC or be willing to relocate. Please reply to me if interested. Thanks! --W ------------------------------ Walter Minkel wminkel@cahners.com * (212) 463-6721 Technology Editor, _School Library Journal_ School Library Journal Position Description Editor, SLJ Online (Full-time) Ideal candidate: a librarian (master's degree in library science) with experience in customizing material for the Web. The candidate will have two or more years' experience working in school or public libraries with children. Highly desirable: Experience in editing for the Web or print publications. Reports to: Editor in Chief Basic functions: 1. Develop new content for site, with input from staff 2. Create and coordinate volunteer committees of Web content compilers 3. Work with art director (or outside design consultant) to present information effectively 4. Use online channels to promote site 5. Develop contacts with contributors/authorities in the field to be aware of how they use Web-based information 6. Demo site at conferences, as needed 7. Work with editors to choose material from print magazine to post on site 8. Edit material, including writing headlines and other display copy 9. Supervise schedule of content updates, performed by freelance HTML coder 10. Monitor traffic statistics and report results to Editor in Chief Supervisory responsibilities: Direct supervision of freelance HTML coder; coordinate activities of volunteer librarians Significant decision-making areas: 1. Largely responsible for direction of SLJ Online 2. Responsible for meeting frequent deadlines technical knowledge: 1. Familiarity with current and emerging Web-based technologies and languages, including HTML, XML, Java script, and Active Server 2. Knowledge of Web-based search capabilities 3. Understanding of how database software functions 4.
