Below are some of the very interesting and helpful things that were shared
with me. Thanks especially to Diane who shared with me how she got her
business started, and how she sets things up! If you have any more ideas,
thoughts, or advice, feel free to pass them on.

Thanks for all the help and advice,
Liz K.

Check out Diane's web site for her business, which answers many of the
questions that I posted:

More advice from Diane -
I will get a list of free space for you. I will have to collect the listing I have
several places. I am using a Mac and I use "Fetch" It is very easy to use.
Some of the
publishing software has FTP in it, I think Netscape communicator may. I also
went to
download.com and some other freeware and shareware sites and did a search.
There are a
lot available. I tried some and came back to Fetch.

And some advice from a personal friend (not a netter)
>Questions:
>Rather than registering a domain name, what would the domain name of the
>organization be, if we used your server space?
I actually don't have a domain name that I'm posting un-registered sites
under. I highly recommend taking the $70 cost to do it. The power of
recognition and sophistication that it artificially loans adds a lot to a
site.

>How can I tell how many mgs my website will be - any quickie ways or
>estimation formulas/rules of thumb you use?

It really depends on your graphics. The entire site JCrewd.com is around 7
megs. The easiest way to tell is to look at your pictures and logos you
want on the page. The text will take next to no space unless you literally
have TONS of it. But if you have a lot of pictures it can start consuming
lots of space. A typical logo or button will consume anywhere from 5-15k,
a picture from 20-200k. So figure 5-50 pictures/megabyte. You really have
to have an idea of what you want to have on the site but those should be
good tools to help you estimate. If you have more details on what you're
having on it, let me know and I might be able to help out more.

Good luck! Let me know if you have anymore ?s

My son is a webmaster, and has done some for non-profits;- here is what he
said, hope it helps--
For the going rates go to:

There are some service providers for non-profits out there. I can't
remember any of them, but they should be listed on Yahoo.

I work in a contract position as a project offer for a business development
group. I perform numerous duties - webmastering among them. Because I am
paid for the contract - it is difficult to say how much of the time is spent
on that site, but call it 30% of my total work time. There I earn about
$100/day so connect the dots yourself - it still doesn't amout to much. Of
course I'm not doing any Java, or CGI scripting either - so it's nothing
fancy.

you wrote,

I also know of a fledgling server here in Manitoba who is looking to get
into full blown hosting services. They will do that Java and CGI stuff too.
At any rate, Don't pay more than $15/month for less than 30MB of storage
till you've checked them out.
