My school business manager tells me that I will have to charge sales tax to my customers, including students, at my middle school library book fair. This doesn't seem right to me. I am planning to take my profits in books because of the minimum sales required in order to take cash. Otherwise I might be able to cover the sales tax myself out of my profits. This is my first book fair, and I'm afraid the sales tax will really discourage a lot of sales, since a $3.95 book would cost over $4.00, etc. Our elementary school Title I program runs 2 book fairs a year to support its RIF program, and they have never charged tax. Is there anyone else in New York State who has run a book fair for the benefit of the library? Did you have to collect sales tax, or is my business manager misinterpreting the law? Please answer tonight if you can, because my book fair starts tomorrow. Giulia Greenberg, Librarian Unadilla Valley Middle School S.
