FIC: Hi/lo 5th/6th grade Fiction/Ethnic

I have a 5th grade teacher who is teaching a small class next year of 5/6
graders who are very low level students.  She wants to start the year with
a good book about  a kid from another country or culture.  It needs to be
available in paperback so she can buy multiple copies.

She said something like the Yang the Youngest, etc., books, but they're too
hard for these kids at the beginning of the year.  It doesn't matter what
country, or ethnic group.  She just wants to start off the year year with
geography, and this would be a good way to relate to otehr customs, lands,
etc.

We need books that aren't too young in interest level!  Any suggestions?
