Lost 1- Original price. (in most cases this "depreciates" the book since a replacement woud cost more now than it did several years ago. 2- Original price plus an added fee to cover costs such as: time of processing a new book, time to reorder, pulling old cars (for those of us still using them), inconvenience of no longer having that book on the shelf, shipping & handling, etc. 3- A set fee: hardbacks $12.00 paperbacks $ 5.00 4- Replacement cost 5- Replacement cost + fees (see #2) 6- Original cost rounded up to the nearest five dollar amount. (i.e. original cost $4.95 becomes $5.00, original cost of $12.95 becomes $15.00) 7- Replacement cost or a minimum of $5.00 8- Do not charge but have student replace it with one of equal or greater value from their home collection (acceptable condition & age appropriate). The librarian has final acceptance or refusal of the replacement offered. -------------------------------------------------------------- For books that will not be replaced or is no longer available 1- charge the price of the book 2- charge a flat $5.00 to $15.00 for hardbacks and $4.00 for paperbacks. -------------------------------------------- Damaged 1- Severly damaged - replacement cost - original cost (minimum $12.00 for hardbacks, $5.00 for paperbacks) - if don't know cost -- $3.00, magazines; $5.00 paperbacks; $10.00, hardbacks 2- Removed or damaged bar code $1.00 to $2.50 3- $1.00 per page or the the cost of the book if price per page exceeds cost of the book. 4- actual cost of repair (materials & time) with a minimun fee of $1.00 to $5.00 - if can be done without loss of important info, text, or illus. - with loss of important info, etc. -- replacement cost 5- minor tears or other minor damage -- just mend -- no charge 6- Binding -- $3.00 to $5.00 7- if need to be rebound -- charge of the rebinding 8- "... books returned without barcodes or spine lables, or damaged (other than normal wear & tear) is a $5 charge, because of the hassle it involves creating just one new barcode or spine label. This may seem excessive, but it is a real deterrent." 9- have student stay after school & help with repair of their damaged book plus other books needing repairs 10-$1.00 to $5.00 for intentional damage or carelesness --------------------------------- Textboooks - "charge $10 for damage caused by neglect, $15 for damage that was probably on purpose but we can fix it, and replacement cost if the book isn't usable." -------------------------------------------------------- If the damage is intentional and malicious though --..."charge for the complete replacement of the book and DO NOT allow the student to keep the book. I would never allow a malicious act to be rewarded in any way." ----------------------------------------------------- Write in RED ink on the inside front cover (or on the first white page) in small print, at the top of the paper "Damage to pages xxx noted - date- repair made." ----------------------------------------------------- Tell the students at orientation to report any damage "....immediately, as soon as they find it. If they do (and we are reasonably sure it wasn't their fault) we do not charge them, but try to back-track to the previous borrower. They know that if they do not tell us, they might be held responsible for not reporting it to us." ------------------------------------------- Insist that students not attempt to make repairs ----------------------------------------------------------------- Stated in policies in student handbooks, so that students & parents are all aware of the policies. ---------------------------------------------- Thanks to all who contributed information to this hit.
