I have a concern that needs expert help, and YOU are the experts. I am becoming concerned about the use of videos by the faculty. As a former classroom teacher, I appreciate the value of a supportive video. I encourage teachers to do what my hero, Roger Taylor, says---show 10 to 12 minutes of a video ...never show "all." We are on the 4 X 4 block, and some people are taking up several days to show something like the movie Holocaust which is three videos long. One American lit teacher turned in a want list of 15 videos that "relate" to American literature. One class reads a Tolstoy novel so they watch some videos of Russian literature. That is her study of Russian literature. We don't have a class in video. These are English classes, and some are AP. Two of those situations are classes that I taught for 20 years, so I am not truly unobjective. We need to encourage reading and discussion about the reading. Showing videos isn't, in my opinion, a way of doing that. My questions are (l)what is my role in this situation and (2) how do I handle this situation in a positive way? Thanks for your continuing support.
