The situation in the LA Times article is unusual in California only in that local money is being spent on the library. The ratio of students to librarians here is over 8,000:1 and the average library book in our schools was published in the early 70s. This year represents the first time in decades that the state has committed money to improve school libraries, so as bad as the situation is, there is reason to hope. Some of us are lucky enough to work in districts that have maintained professional library staff even when money was tight, but we are a small minority. "- Have I got this right?
