TARGET: Teaching Keyboarding - 4th Grade

Dear Virtual Colleagues,=20

Because of additional sections of grades added to our school next year=20
and no additional staffing to provide planning time, I will be teaching=20
keyboarding to four sections of 4th graders.

I have never taught any keyboarding or even taken any keyboarding=20
classes myself.  (I=D5m fast but sloppy on the keyboard!) =20

Our district has used software to =D2teach=D3 students keyboarding with=20
various degrees of success.  We now have a new district-written 4th=20
grade curriculum which is designed for twenty 45 minute classes.   It=20
is teacher-directed instruction, much like typing was taught years ago,=20
using a general word processing program (ClarisWorks - we are a Mac=20
school).  I will use this curriculum as the basis of my instruction.

The schedule that we have proposed for my teaching will have the=20
students for 13-15 classes (3 weeks) in a row before the next group=20
cycles in and then comes back again 9 weeks later.  The classes will=20
have two 3 week sessions in all.

I am interested in ideas for making this experience more interesting=20
and exciting for the students (and me!).  If you have suggestions,=20
lesson plans, web sites, or other ideas, please reply to me.=20
