Please pass this along to your art teaching staff. Our 7-8th grade art
classes, have developed a "Common Thread" project for the students and staff
in our school (1,200 students - grades 7-8), to demonstrate their willingness
to accept others in the light of the school violence which has happened
lately across the country. The concept of this project is for persons to
create a unique, individualized piece of wearable art using seven colors from
the artist's color wheel. Itrems such as necklaces, bracelets, ankle bands,
book bag tags, key rings, hair decorations, braided lapel ribbons, additions
to cap and gown tassels, etc. can be easily created from these materials -
embroidery thread, beads, and a safety pin. Our students chose the following
colors and representations:
Red - Love; Orange - Faith; Yellow -Hope; Green - Growth; Light
Blue-Compassion; Dark Blue - Trust; and Purple - Courage. The beads, one in
silver, one in gold, represent friends - old and new - and can be used as
clasps. The safety pin is not only a fastener, but also symbolizes a joining
together. The challenge is for anyone to use these materials to create a
visible symbol to MAKE - LIVE - WEAR - GIVE to someone outside their
familiar circle FINDING A COMMON THREAD. These materials are prepackaged in
a small kit with a sale price of $ .50 to students and staff to help defray
the cost of materials only. Our media center is proud to be a part of this
project. If you have further questions or would like more information,
please do not hesitate to e-mail or call our school.
