Dear LMNET friends, When my retro-conversion was done by Winnebago five years ago, I was not immediately aware that the great majority of subject headings for my easy books were not included in the conversion. As I began typing the prices of the books (which also were not included in my conversion) from my old shelflist cards, I began to notice that there were almost NO subject headings for the majority of both my easy books AND my fiction books. I've been trying to go back and type them in as I've typed in the prices of my books. I'm beginning to believe that it is a losing battle, though. I have noticed that many books from the jobbers I've used also do not include subject headings. (And I ordered full MARC records.) The books (and records) I ordered directly from Rosen Publishing Company not only did not have subjects headings, there were no books summaries, either. Also, Follett, my main jobber, has not been including subject headings on most fiction books or easy books. I don't understand why not. It isn't as if there are no records available, because nearly all of these books have CIP in the front. When I ordered cards from Follett before I automated, they included every possible type of card and subject heading, added entry, etc. (which had to be a lot more expensive). If anything, I would think that MARC records would be more inclusive, not less. Are other jobbers omitting crucial information like this? I may need to change jobbers. Elementary librarians depend on these easy book subject headings to fill the requests of our teachers--especially the preschool and kindergarten teachers. I would love to know if this true of all jobbers (and retrospective conversions). Please let me know if this is a problem with other jobbers.
