Dear New Hampshire LM_Netters:

Jonathan Daniels Elementary School, in conjunction with the city of
Keene, has come up with an activity related to the millenium that we
feel may interest other teachers in the state.

Judy Martin, one of our 2nd grade teachers, proposed that we challenge
all of the schools in New Hampshire to join together and plant 2000 new
trees during the month of May in the year 2000. She is excited about
this opportunity to connect with other teachers in NH and also the
opportunity to help the environment at the same time.

We would supply the tree seedlings, if a commitment to plant was made by
other schools in New Hampshire. The commitment would have to be made by
November of 1999 and the trees would be available at the beginning of
May, 2000. (We could mail the trees or they could be picked up at a
distribution center near you. The logistics would be worked out after
you've committed to the project.)

This can turn into a diverse Internet project, especially if we can
get people from all over the state to become involved and provide
information on climate, where they are planting, soil conditions, etc.
which we would then post on a website for all participants (or anyone)
to view and connect with.

We are planning on posting some integrated unit possibilities over the
course of the school year on a webpage - which is as yet not created but
we are working on it!

If you are interested in participating in this project, or know of a
teacher in your school who may be interested in accepting the challenge,
please contact Judy Martin at jmartin@sau29.k12.nh.us or myself. You
will be sent a list of the available seedlings along with some more
concrete logistics.

Also, please post this message in your school for all of the teachers to
be aware of this challenge.

Judy mentioned that she plans on planting around Arbor Day and that
others could tie into that area of study as well. This is a very
exciting event for us and if you are interested in joining us - please,
have the people interested in participating email Judy or myself as
quickly as possible.

Thanks!
