I always put books about sex right on the shelf where they belong according to Dewey. I made no fanfare about them; nothing to call attention to them. Kids have the amazing ability to find what they need. Of course, if a student asked for information about sex, I'd steer them to what he needed, as with any other topic. Sex books have a tendency to grow legs and walk out of the library, but I was able to keep many titles on the shelf. If books are held behind the desk or in some other inaccessible place, we are making a statement about the subject matter. I managed to get through my whole career without challenge to sexual, or any other, material. Kids tend to know what they shouldn't take home. On the other hand, I had one book that took forever to get back because the student and her mom were reading every word together.
