LM_NET: Library Media Networking

I have worked out a system for collecting overdues and fines that seems to
be pretty efficient, and I thought I'd share it with my LM-NET colleagues.

Every spring the guidance office sees each student to review his or her
schedule for the following year. The guidance counsellors see them
clusters, alphabetically, of about 25 to 30 at a time. They use the
library to do this, and I have no other patron traffic during those few
days.

After each student's schedule has been reviewed and approved, he is sent to
the guidance secretary for a pass back to class. But guess who they have
to see in order to get to her!? Yeah -- me. I see EACH STUDENT in that
three day period, check their account, and review it with them. Some
students need a gentle reminder, some I make stand there and write
everything they owe me. With some, I put names on a list of people to keep
a close eye on in the last days of school.

This doesn't get everything returned, but it's a great feature of the Year
End Push. I've collaborated with teachers in lots of departments, but this
in one of my most valued -- and serendipitous.

Eighteen days and counting,

There's no use going to school
unless your final destination is
the library.

Subject: Re: Successful overdue returns

In the state of Iowa, the holding of report cards is illegal as well as
holding diplomas for traffic fees (as in hundreds of dollars of unpaid
on-campus parking violation fines). Presents a dilemna for sure.
