Online Auctions (Buying a computer)

Has any one had the experience of buying a computer from an online auction
site such as http://www.surplusauction.com or http://www.zdnetauctions.com.

I have looked at these sites and the prices look good.  Both new and
refurbished machines are offered.  Can you offer  any advice on
purchasing a computer through an auction web site?

I am interested in purchasing a laptop and I want to spend under $1200.00.
I know I will not be able to afford the latest technology, but an older
machine would suit my needs as long as it meets my minimum requirements --
CD ROM drive, modem, active matrix screen, 200 MHX, at least 2G hard drive.
