I have a wonderful librarian friend, Jo Ann Jonas, who moved to San Diego =
in August, (husband relocation) Her previous position was as the manager =
of The Early Childhood Resource Center at New York Public Library serving =
children, parents and teachers. She is the former director of a Montessori=
school. She is an avid user of technology, an advocate and one of the =
most well-read children's librarians around. She is an active member of =
ALA and a mentor. She earned her MLIS from Pratt Institute in NY with =
honors and continues to take advantage of professional development =
opportunities.
Most recently she wrote the preschool section of the NY State Summer =
Reading Handbook for summer 2000.

I am writing because she hasn't been able to find a position in California.=
She would be an exceptional public librarian, a terrific elementary or =
middle school media specialist, and some lucky college with an education =
dept. would be grateful to have her on staff.

I think the problem is a reluctance to toot her own horn.

If anyone has any job leads or suggestions please e-mail me because her =
modem is broken and being replaced. in the evening or weekends pvondrasek@a=
ol.com or during the work week lisav@bnkst.edu .

I guess that I would like to know what kind of rag the Washington Times
(not Post) is? It sounds like the article was written by Dr. Laura
herself. There is no doubt that the profession is changing with the
times. I myself do not think that there is anything wrong with ALA
supporting gay rights, etc. However, seeing that our funding is often
based on community support, I have very mixed emotions about filtering
for kids. On the one hand, I think that filtering (we have it in our
school district) often filters out the good and leaves the bad. We
would not order pornographic literature for our collections in schools
so just what do we do about the Internet? As a person who is over 45,
female, and liberal, I am in a bind. What should I do and what do we do
about articles like this that do not talk about the good things we do,
but portray us in a pejorative light?
