There weren't too many hits (meaning there are too many successful reading programs???), but here goes. (The identity of respondents has been suppressed.) Thanks to all who responded! ********************* My old hs has a twenty minute home room period called reading break, anouncements and other important stuff and 15min of reading here is the address of the principal is bpeck@wausau.k12.wi.us or there web site at http://www.wausau.k12.wi.us/east/ We are in our second year of SSR; we started with 2 days a week at the beginning of each school day and read for 20 minutes. This year we expanded it to every day except Tues. which is club day. If a student does not have a club meeting to go to, then that time is also spent with SSR. Even the staff who were against it during the first year were overwhelmingly in favor of it this year. I teach in a middle school where I students were required to do 30 minutes of sustained silent reading in a homeroom type setting. Also some of the teachers used this time occasionally for those read alouds that they never seem to have time for. Management/discipline was no problem. Teachers took role by having the students give the title and page number where they were reading. Any student without a book or who did not use this time to read lost his 5 points for the day. The total points were then used as 10% of the student's language arts grade. All teachers loved this time, but the scheduling monster ate it. Our school employs a program called D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read)twice a month, not daily. It is a formatted program that takes up about 40 minutes. The first 20 minutes are devoted to silent reading, the next 10 minutes to writing or otherwise portraying on paper impressions of what was read, and the last 10 minutes to sharing what was read and written. The times obviously can be lengthened or shortened to fit your needs. The material can be either teacher-directed or student-selected. Obviously you could not take 40 min. each day for this program. Maybe this will give you some ideas. ************************* Regards, Robert Robert Hiebert Librarian, Golden Secondary School www.sd6.bc.ca/gss/library/ Fax: 250 344 7116 rhiebert@sd6.bc.ca =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
