When a teacher tells her students they can't read something because it is
too hard, is she limiting what they can read for her class?  If so, you can
encourage these students to take out books that might be a stretch for their
own, personal, recreational reading AT HOME.  The teacher should not be
limiting what her students can read extra-curricularly.  Now you have to
figure out a nice way to explain that to her.  Good luck!
