I used to get this when I was an elementary school librarian. Here are a few approaches or ssssstatements to use: 1) "Children learn to read in your classroom where they may read books on the level you wish. The library is where they learn to enjoy reading, hopefully establishing the habit of becoming a lifelong reader, and to really do that they need the freedom to choose whatever strikes their fancy." 2) "They may have someone at home to help them with more difficult words." "They may enjoy reading an easier book to a younger child." 3) Give them permission to take two books - one on the level the teacher feels necessary and the other the child's choice. This works also if the student has a book report or other assignment.
