Actually, it was a dog that ran with the kids in his neighborhood.  I remember
it because there was a dog in our neighborhood -- Cocoa, a full-sized standard
poodle -- that ran with us in our neighborhood when I was a kid and, like the
dog in Van Allsburg's books, was not particularly nice but sure adopted us as
his pack.  He once killed a rattlesnake in a fight that seemed, to us, to last
hours.  Van Allsburg's book, In the Garden of Abdul Gasazi, features the dog.
