I've had a potential challenge come up, I'd like your input. A student
checked out an old Curious George book. I think it's the CG gets a Medal (he
still has the book.) His mother called the office and thinks the book is
inappropriate for students. In it there is a line something along the lines
of; " George felt so bad he wished he was dead."

Now I'm not sure how I feel about it.

It is only a figure of speech, but it is a particularly awful one to use. We
weed books that have old ways of speaking that are now considered racist or
offensive. With the sensitivity toward student violence, is this not
something that we should consider. It is also a very old book, even if it is
our favorite monkey. It wouldn't hurt our collection not to have it.

On the other hand, I don't want to encourage parents to start searching for
anything they find offensive in our books. It is after all only a figure of
speech. This might be a good time for her and her child to discuss these
kinds of feelings others have and he might have someday.

I don't know yet where I'll come down on this one. But I would love to hear
your opinions.

Thanks
