TECH: opening e-mail attachments

I need help with an e-mail concern.  One of the teachers has received
two e-mail messages from a friend each of them containing attachments.
However, when we try to open them it tells us it needs some type of
application to open it with and it wants us to go out and pick an
application to open it with.  I've tried several, but nothing seems to
open the documents.  Can anyone tell me what to use to open and view
these two documents? The wording that accompanies the file is as
follows:
Type:  application/x-msdownload
Encoding:  base64

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks
