Mending is usually cheaper than replacing. I have found, however, that a
proactive approach is best. Many books, the Dear America series, for
instance, will last a lot longer if, before circulation, the inside cover
is taped with hinge tape. Taping is also a must for certain periodicals,
like SI for Kids and Nickleodeon.
Easy Techniques for Lasting Book Repair and Protecting Library Materials
From Wear
and Tear are two videos from Demco that may be helpful.
Finally, show your patrons what you do to reinforce and repair books.
Better yet, do it in front of them. This, combined with reminders to them
about book care (recruit a group to make posters for the library), will go
a long way toward protecting the collection. Good luck and happy mending.
