LM_NETTERS, Thank you to all who responded. It seems there are many people with = German heritage that have never heard of this custom. One person = suggested it may have come from Czech or Slavic area. Of those that had = heard the custom it goes like this" On Christmas Eve after the children are in bed. The parents decorate the = Chirstmas tree. The last ornament to be placed on the tree is the glass = pickle. It is hidden in the boughs of the tree.=20 On Christmas morning the children try to find the pickle. It is hard to = locate because it is green like the tree. The first one to locate it gets = an extra gift. If the family couldn't afford the extra gift the child = gets to open their present first.
