I have moved this year from high school to intermediate school. My current school is heavily into AR. I agree that it is a wonderful reading incentive, but I bite my tongue daily when I hear teachers say a student can't read that book because it's "not on his level", or a student say he can't read a book because it's not AR! I also found that at the beginning of the school year, before Accelerated Reader was updated for the year on the computers, that there was more of a variety in the checkouts -- more non-fiction, for example. I started off the year booktalking and reading a portion of Gulliver's Travels, of which we have no AR test. The kids were fascinated by the story, so I emphasized finding a good story, rather than points. However, I'm finding that the library budget and circulation is being driven by Accelerated Reader -- I plan on getting customized tests for those titles I think should be read but are not on the "list", as well as getting more non-fiction titles that are Accelerated Reader.
