I recently came across a book that you may be interested in.

Pepita talks twice/Pepita habla dos veces  by Ofelia Dumas Lachtman.
Illustrated by Alex Pardo DeLange. Published by Pinata Books, A Division
of Arte Publico Press, University of Houston, Houston, TX 77204-2090

LC 95-9869
ISBN 1-55885-077-5 hardcover
          1-55885-243-3 paper

The cover says that it received a "Skipping Stones Honor Award" .  I have
never heard of that, so I'm not certain what it indicates.  The reading
level is approximately 2nd grade.
