Aside -- Here in NYS there is a coordinated by the State Ed Dept summer reading program that goes out to all public libraries and ultimately to the School Library System. Several schools do reading lists but do not keep track of the books kids read over the summer. Many send this list to the local public library. Some schools have parents sign off on the list for the books actually read. From Rockville, MD Reading is mandatory that during the summer with suggested lists distributed. From Madison, AL Not mandatory, but shared the list with local Barnes and Noble who makes a display of the books on the list. From Rocketmail acct. Extensive instructions are sent with the list of books. From Central Valley, NY Summer reading lists on the district home page. in HS all honor students are required to read certain books with a percent of grade in first quarter of year.
