HIT: Age of HS Collections

Friends, Thanks again for all the information re the age of HS collections.
Following is a summary of that information as several of you asked for it.

Many bemoaned the fact that their collections are also older and funding is
not available to completely update them.  Suggestions for ages varied but
anything having to do with science and computers should be new - an overall
opinion - 2- 5 years old.  Fairy tales will often be older and could easily
drag the overall age of your collection down.

Check out the book Collection Assessment by Debra Kachel.  Make a long range
plan for improvement and work at it even if slowly.

Check out the weed of the month form Florida.  this is a web site, no
address, but is updated each month and a message is posted regularly to
LMNET.  It will be in the archives.  Good guidelines here.

Remember that all old books are not bad - some are good resource docs,
almost primary sources.
