It is important to note that about a week after I posted the retraction
I started to get some positive response from the vendor. They are
attempting to address some of the issues that prompted my first posting,
and they promise significant improvement in their product by the end of
November. I will be very pleased to post a message about any and all
improvements in December. I wish this level of communication and
cooperation had been achieved before the original posting.

This has been an educational experience for me (as well as scary and
stressful).

"There are really several issues here. No one should use their school
site/district email for other than school business. Remember, you
represent
your school/principal, etc., not just your own opinion, when you do."
The people who commented on personal vs. employer's email raise an
important point. All disclaimers aside, using the employer's email
service does make the employer a participant in the posting. I was not
speaking for my employer, and it is quite true that there are many in my
school district satisfied with the vendor/software. This was not made
clear in my original posting.

Many people commented on the difference between flaming and constructive
criticism. I stand by my comments in the original posting, and of
course flaming a vendor is not the way to resolve problems or develop a
positive relationship with a vendor. However, we are a community of
information providers, and one of the most valuable functions of LM_NET
is forum it provides to share information and assist others by sharing
our knowledge and experiences.

I am very encouraged by the many comments on positive vendor response to
LM_NET postings. I believe (based on recent communication with my
vendor) that the vendor is trying to respond to my concerns. I look
forward to confirming this in future postings. It is just as important
(maybe more) to acknowledge genuine effort and success as it is to make
fair and honest criticism. Vendors and library staff who recognise this
will always find themselves in a win-win situation.

In the interests of keeping this message short enough for people to be
able to read, I will stop now. Many thanks once again for your
encouraging words and cautionary comments. It helps enormously to know
that the combined wisdom and experience of LM_NET is out there.

Subject: H.S. Flame About Intellectual Snobbery

Dear Listeners,

Can I report and flame for a second? A head of a dept. at my school
doesn't support bringing junior and seniors to the library.

I''ve given gentle urgings for one yr. So I finally met this person face
to face for help in getting his dept to use the library. They used to be
my best dept., always encouraging students to use the lib. and bringing
classes in.

On and on....I'll cut it short. When I spoke with the teacher I met a
concrete wall! I paraphrase: [teacher said] I think the Internet was
designed for dummies, and I have never had trouble finding things in a
library. ---This is his rationale for not bringing 16-17 yr. olds to the
school library!

I'm disheartened and sickened.
