GEN: Survey: Do you have Mandatory Union Membership?

Dear LM_NETters:

I have written to Peter Milbury for permission to ask this favor of the
list. I am looking for assistance in completing the following survey. If
you would kindly forward your responses to me at the below address, I
would be very grateful. I will keep all responses anonymous. I would,
however, like to be able to communicate with you if needed.


1. Please tell which state in the U.S.A. you are from:

2. Is your school unionized?

3. Are professional staff required to join the union or pay a "agency
service fee" to the union?

4. Are non-professional staff (secretaries, aides, custodian, tutors…)
required to join the union or pay an "agency service fee" to the union?

5. Does your union allow payment of the "agency service fee" to
non-union groups - such as a contribution to a local school group
(scholarships, library support, arts programs support, etc) or to a
national non-profit group (United Way, Red Cross, etc)?

6. Do you have any information of a recent court decision which stated
that mandatory union membership as a condition for employment was
unconstitutional? If so, please include references.
