Clements, Andrew._The Landry News_, 1999 [0-689-81817-3] In an unstructured 5th grade classroom Cara decides to write a newspaper. It takes off like hotcakes! Other kids get involved in it and the teacher is all excited about it. The principal is out to get the teacher and uses one article in the paper to get a disciplinary action against the teacher. The teacher uses the whole process as a lesson in 1st amendment rights and ethics in journalism. There is precidence that a Principal may control a school newspaper, but the teacher insists that it is a classroom project and not a school paper. This 123 page book is a dynamite lesson in the freedom of speech and ethics in journalism along with being a great story. It would be a wonderful class read and discussion starter. I initially thought it was going to be just another cute school story but it is so much more. This is a very useful book (I got similar feelings about Gutman's "The kid who ran for President.") *** Frederick Muller fmuller@tellurian.net Halsted Middle School (973) 383-7440 ext.228 59 Halsted Street FAX (973) 383-7432 Newton, NJ 07860 ------- My book reviews are compiled at: http://www.halsted.org/br.htm =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
