I work for a district that is proud to call itself the 16th largest in the nation. There are 96 elementary schools; 25 middle schools and 13 high schools with a combined enrollment of just over 137,000 students. We do not have, however, a coordinator at the district level for the media specialists. This is only my second year in the profession, so maybe I'm missing something, but it seems to me that someone at the district level to work both with the media specialists - or the clerical workers that take care of many of our media centers - to answer questions and to work with various vendors to get the best pricing for supplies and various software contracts would be very advantageous. I know in a perfect world every individual school would be paying the same price for each item it purchased, but I think there are a lot of vendors that sell things 'cheaper by the dozen.' I also know there is a LOT to be said for only having to answer to the personnel in your own school, but I am curious as to how many large, say over 50,000 students, do not have a media coordinator at the district level. TIA for any light you can shed on my dim view.
