I am full of a lack of Christmas cheer this evening - my Christmas tree has fallen over three times today!! Thanks to everyone who helped point out resources for choral reading. Here are some of the responses: *************************************************************************** **** Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices won a Newbery or Newbery Honor Book Award a few years ago. And there were several other books in a similar or related series which were good for choral reading. One was Voices on the Ark or "From the Ark"? Just take a picture-book story in rhyme yourself and divide it into various configurations of voices. 1989: Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices by Paul Fleischman (Harper) [Belinda - I have Joyful Noise but was unable to determine the exact title of the Ark book.] *************************************************************************** **** You need to get a hold of Toby Lurie's books of "musical" poems. When I was at middle school, Tobie came to visit. I was so amazed to see him get these middlers excited about doing group readings. [Amazon does not carry any of Lurie's book, Barnes and Noble lists several. Could someone recommend one in particular?] *************************************************************************** **** The Folktellers (Connie Regan Blake and Barbara Freeman) used to perform a _Jazzy Three Bears_. [The Jazzy Three Bears is on The Folktellers video, Pennies, Pets, and Peanut Butter. It is WONDERFUL. The facial expressions of these two women are great. The Jazzy Three Bears portion is short but good.] *************************************************************************** **** I just attempted a simple choral reading activity with 4th graders (actually a gift for their teacher with baby - recorded the reading with background music) We choral read The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss. In other classes we tried The Runaway Bunny and Five Little Monkeys but they didn't come off so well. My favorite choral reading activities were a selection of Thanksgiving poems that I scripted last year for students in 2nd and 4th grade. I dug them out and we're doing them again next week. I believe most of the poems came from the book Thanksgiving Poems by Myra Cohen Livingston. I also bought a book at teachers' convention that includes three tapes of background music. It's called _Concert Reading: Poems and Stories to Read with Music_ by Nancy Polette , published by Pieces of Learning. And we have a book in our poetry section that's called Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices(Paul Fleischman, Harper and Row 1988) They are probably the closest to what you describe in wanting the voices provide the "music" or rhythm. *************************************************************************** **** Jazz Chant Fairy Tales by Carolyn Graham, Mimi Brennan (Illustrator), Marybeth Farrell $13.95 Card catalog description A collection of eight traditional fairy tales presented in the author's jazz chant style and designed to teach the rhythms of spoken American English primarily to students of English as a second language. [On the recommendation of several people I ordered three books written by Carolyn Graham. They are intended for use by ESL students and published by Oxford University Press. They come with tapes. I purchased Jazz Chants (intended for adults but some are appropriate for children), Jazz Chants for Children (more instructional) and Jazz Chant Fairy Tales (wonderful). There are teacher editions of the books and children's editions. I got all three titles and cassettes for the first two very quickly from Amazon. Unfortunately the tape for the fairy tale book was listed at $31 and I just couldn't justify that. I went to the Oxford University website and could find no listing for any of these items. I'm guessing that means they no longer publish them.] *************************************************************************** **** Not sure whether this would meet your needs but I can remember doing one of the Just So stories by Kipling as a choral reading - the one about the kangaroo and the dingo.
