I received two responses to the following request than I posted Nov
12.

A sophomore English teacher is looking for a good title to teach in
conjunction with Antigone. She would prefer either a contemporary
play or short novel that deals with any of the following themes:
Society vs. individual, family honor, sacrifice, abuse of power and
has a strong female character. A recent LM-NET request asked a
similar question, but for yong adult titles for 8th graders. We
are
looking for adult titles appropriate for sophomores.

Some titles already being considered are: Antigone by Anouilh,
Another Antigone by Gurney, The handmaid's Tale by Atwood, Bride
Price by Emecheta, and In the time of the butterflies by Alvarez.

The titles that were suggested are:
Staples, Suzanne Fisher. Shabanu : Daughter of the Wind.
1991.

Synopsis from Amazon.com
Set against the backdrop of desert life in present-day Pakistan, this
book offers a passionate and deeply personal portrait of a young
girl's struggle for identity in a culture that forbids even token
expressions of independence by women. 1990 Newbery Honor Book; ALA
Notable Book; ALA Best Book for Young Adults ...Reading level is Young
Adult.

Bauer, Joan. Rules of the Road. 1998.

From Kevin Clement
This may not be quite what you are looking for but Rules of the Road
by
Joan Bauer contains a lot of these qualities. A strong female
character
who has her moments of doubts. Family problems as well as honor,
sacrifices, abuse of power, death are all in it. It made me laugh
and
cry. It also ends with a more positive note than Antigone. Even if
it
doesn't fit with Antigone, I truly feel this is a must read book.

Thanks to the people who responded. At this point the teacher plans
to teach In the time of the butterflies by Alvarez.
