ELEM: The Sweetest Fig

I have been reading The Sweetest Fig by Chris Van Allsburg to my third
graders.  What a response they have had to this book!  Of course the pictures
are wonderful and a couple are very funny.  And, there are many opportunities
for the students to predict what will happen next.  It also lends itself well
for creative writing.  Most of the students did not like the ending because
it leaves much to the imagination.  As a class we discussed possible
different endings or how the story could continue.  Next year, though, I will
have them write their own endings.  Just wanted to share with the group how
much my students loved this book!
