I believe the "two" versions refer only to the covers. The English edition has a rather young looking Harry Potter, and on the front cover (of Potter II)is the seal for an award given to it for 9-11 year olds best book. (An annual prize - I gave my copy away, so I can't remember what it is). The American publishers deliberately made the covers with subdued colors and an older looking Potter so that adults and older teenagers wouldn't be put off.
