>Many thanks to all who responded to my request for picture books dealing with various conflict resolutions issues. This has been a great help. Here is the hit : Scholastic has a Professional book- Teaching Conflict Resoultion Through >Children's Literature. It is written for grades K-2 but you might take a look >at the the titles. >___________________________________________________________________________ I feel like I'm always recommending "Feelings" by >Aliki. >___________________________________________________________________________ ___ You can suggest Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman. I read it to first and second >graders. ____________________________________________________________________________ My school is focusing on this theme also. There is a bibliography in the archives. I think you look under "values". It goes subject by subject with books listed. One of the ones we like the best is Best Friends for Frances by Hoban. An oldy but goody dealing with exclusion. Good for acting out possible endings. Grouchy Ladybug by Carle and Today I feel Silly by Curtis for identifying feelings The first chapter, I think, in The Hundred Dresses by Estes deals with conflict resolution also ____________________________________________________________________________ _____ I'm not exactly sure where this fits in, but I really like the book. It's called, It Doesn't Have to Be This Way (Rodriguez). It's a bilingual picture book (Eng/Spanish) about a little boy being pressured to join a gang. He goes along with it for a little while because he doesn't know how to get out of it. But his girl cousin tries to convince him not to join and shows up just as he is to be jumped in. A drive by ensues, and the cousin is shot (injured, not killed). This shocks him into realizing that he shouldn't join, and he backs off. It's very well done. Sounds violent, but is really perfect for intermediate, and could still be used in Jr. High, since the characters are about that age. ____________________________________________________________________________ _______ Please consider using Jane Kurtz' FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN in your conflict resolution unit. Beautifully illustrated by E.B. Lewis, and critically acclaimed, it is the retelling of an Ethiopian folktale in which a conflict is resolved by the sort of turning-the-tables that allows the underling in the conflict to reveal his wisdom and the dominant person to be graciously humbled and generous. A Jewish version of the story is also published and entitled IN THE MONTH OF KISLEV. ____________________________________________________________________________ ______ Here is a good source for books on tolerance and related topics. I attended the Teaching Steps to Tolerance workshop and highly recommend it for next summer. <A HREF="http://tst.wiesenthal.com/resources/literature.html">Literature - Teaching Steps to Tolerance</A> http://tst.wiesenthal.com/resources/literature.html ____________________________________________________________________________ __________ Jane Perry/Library Media Specialist Winslow Jr. High Library 10 Danielson St. Winslow, ME 04901 jperry@mailhost.winslow-jhs.u52.k12.me.us http://www.winslow-jhs.u52.k12.me.us/jperry/main.htm =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
