I am currently using Digest mode, so my apologies if this has already been answered. Depending on how you want to look it it, there is more than one version of each Harry Potter book. First, the British and American releases have different covers. In addition, certain words were changed in the American release because the publishing company felt that American children would not grasp some of the British uses of certain words. The most obvious example is the title of the first book - "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" overseas, and "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" in the US. Second, and I believe this was what the original question referred to, an adult version and a children's version was released in the US. The only difference between the two was the cover. The publishing company noted how popular the book was with the adult market, and felt that some adults may be embarrassed to be seen with a "children's" book, so made the adult cover less "obvious." I am fairly certain this was mentioned in Time or Newsweek (prior to the September 20th issue of Time, where Harry graced the cover) though I'm afraid I can't name a particular issue offhand.
