I think this is worth discussing. I try to arrange for my 6th graders to do a lesson using the encyclopedia, and deliberately have them use BOTH the print and electronic versions to help them decide which best suits their needs and learning styles. I then have them tell, in a few sentences, which they prefer and why, and whether they would choose it for different kinds of information problems (e.g., quick reference or detailed discussion). Interestingly, in each year that I have done this, I get half choosing the print, and half choosing the electronic. I think it is important to have both if you can afford it. (Personally it would make me crazy if all I had was the electronic version, because I like to browse the whole article in most cases, which is most tedious using one screen [or partial screen] at a time.)
