l book that covers anything of
interest to a growing-up girl. Topics include; the changing body, hygiene,
fashion, crafts, and so many "cool" topics. A girl could read and feel she
was learning about being a girl and not just reading a book on puberty. I
wish it had been available when my daughter was at that age. I am going to
order it for my library. I am not sure of the title, but I am sure it is
advertised in the magazine.

From: Robert & Tracy Riley <tandrriley@MINDSPRING.COM>
Subject: General Hello and Internet Use Policy

Until two weeks ago I was two classes away from obtaining my Master's Degree
in Library Science with a concentration in Academic and Universiy libraries.
However, I was recently offered an employment opportunity at a transitional
high school, which is a school for those students with difficulty succeeded
in the mainstream, primarly B.E.D. students, or substance abuse, etc.
Predicated on my circumstances I am truly diving into the LMS field feet
first, therefore I was excited to find this listserv, for I anticipate that
I will have endless questions throughout the year, hence my first post. The
library is brand new at this school, I am brand new to the field and there
are 12 computers sitting in a closet waiting to be unpacked and set up. The
computers are my first priority. I feel they will be an impetus for many of
these students to use the library and place they do not often frequent. As
such, the computers, I feel, will be a stepping stone to comprehensive
library use.
My question is two fold; I was hoping many of you would have interenet use
policies I could review and build off for my students and secondly, based on
the students histories I intend on using filtering devices, which would you
reccommend. I shutter at the though of filtering, as they are anathema to
the Library Bill of Rights, but based on the population, for appropriate and
positive use of the internet I feel it is necessary. Thank you for your
time and consideration and I look forward to the LM_NET being a valuable
resource over the upcoming academic year.

Peace
