I asked for Debate Resources. This is what I got. Sarah S. Uthoff Young Adult Librarian Cedar Rapids Public Library uthoff@fyiowa.infi.net I have a set from Grolier's called Taking Sides (I think, still not back to work yet). It is a 9 or 10 volume set and it presents both side of an issue. it covers lots of material with each volume devoted to one topic. I'm not back to work yet but some topics I remember are related to social issues such as teen pregnancy, drugs and society, or educational issues, and so on. Each topic begins with a question and overview (if I remember correctly). There are essays by experts in the field for each side of the argument. The teacher who taught debate in my school loved it. M. Rodgers, Librarian As a librarian and a member of the debate community, I was so pleased to see your posting on LM_NET. Below I have listed the exact wording of the resolution and two key web sites for collecting materials on the topic. Both web sites include lists of print material which you may find as appropriate for your collection as they are for those researching the topic. Best wishes, Marcia Mardis Internet Media Specialist Merit Network, UM Ann Arbor The resolution: Resolved: That the federal government should establish an education policy to significantly increase academic achievement in secondary schools in the United States. The two best web sites: http://www.lib.umich.edu/libhome/Documents.center/debate99.html http://www.ukans.edu/cwis/units/kulib/docs/debate99.html I saw your post on LM_Net and wanted to let you know of an excellent source. Taking Sides is a series of books on controversial topics that provide both a pro and con article on different topics. I had this set at the high school that I worked at last year. If you are interested I will find out further information about the set. Kathi L.
