I have a young friend who is in the Teach for America program. His only education training was this summer working with first graders. He just found out today that he will be in Washington Heights, an Hispanic area in New York City. He will have 32 seventh graders a day, teaching them math, American History, language arts, and earth science. He has 6 days to get ready. I have suggested he read In the Middle by Atwell. What else does he need to read right away to help him with classroom management and organization? He only knows a little Spanish himself and is from a farm in the southwest so there is also a huge cultural gap he will need to overcome. Also what would you suggest for some absolutely awesome read alouds to help him get started with this group?
