Re: ESEA Reauthorization -- support for school libraries -- Action
Needed

On June 22 Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) introduced S.1262, the Elementary and
Secondary School Library Media Resources, Training, and Advanced
Technology Assistance Act of 1999. The bill, which was referred to the
Senate Health, Eduction, Labor and Pensions Committee, has the following
co-sponsors: Sens. Thad Cochran (R-MS), Paul Sarbanes (D-MD), Ted
Kennedy (D-MA), Tom Daschle (D-SD), Harry REid (D-NV), Patty Murray (D-WA).
Max Baucus (D-MT) and Jeff Bingaman (D-NM).

To see Sen. Reed's total presentation of the bill, go to CONGRESSSIONAL
    RECORD, June 22, 1999 at http://www.access.gpo.gov/congress/retrcrpg.html.

    ACTION NEEDED:

Senate: In order for Sen. Reed's S.1262 to be included in the ESEA
Reauthorization, MORE SENATE SPONSORS ARE NEEDED. Contact your Senator
(NOW!!) and ask him/her to co-sponsor this legislation which is very
important to K-12 children in every one of the fifty states.

You can send an e-mail by using the ALA Legislative Action Center at:
http://congress.nw.dc.us/ala. This will allow you to communicate with
    both senators and House representatives.

House: Lead sponsors need to be foud in the House also, and other
sponsors obtained, preferably from the membership of the House Committee
on Education and the Workforce. This list can be obtained at:
    http://www.house.gov/eeo/members/mem-fc.htm.

Contact your representative TODAY, and give them your specific
information on amounts of money spent on school library materials from
Title VI, how valuable this is to your students and teachers, what the
needs are for credentialed school librarians in your state/school
district/county, and what needs exist for technology training and sharing
of resources. You can write a letter, use an e-mail address, or call the
    capitol switchboard at 202/224-3121.

You can also make this information available to vendors with whom you
deal, PTA groups, and any local lodges, clubs, etc. who are concerned
    with literacy and kids learning.

Please act today....your voice CAN and WILL make a difference. We need
to get this legislation passed, and the more co-sponsors the better the
    chances.
