Target: Obscure Tale/Story

This will test us, I am sure...
A 4th grader approached her 1st grade teacher and wanted to know the
name of a book the teacher read in 1st grade.  ..Neither of us can
identify the tale.  The story, as remembered is:
Man and wife have always wanted children but have none.  Fairy sees them
and sends down several small fairy babies to their home.  Couple take
care of them.  As a reward for their kindness, the fairy then presents
them with a real baby.
   If you can identify story, please let me know.
