My Lower School counterpart and I have been asked to hold a workshop for a group of teachers from small not-very-affluent private schools who have been placed in charge of their school libraries. We are well aware that they are not librarians and that we cannot teach them to be librarians in one day. However, unqualified people running small private school libraries is a fact of life, at least in our state, and we are glad the state private school association is finally moving toward establishing some standards. We feel confident that we will be able to assist them in getting the books in their schools into some kind of order, will be able to help them build these collections, and will be able to show them and their schools how to move toward having a real library with a real librarian. Minimum collection standards will be required for the first time for these schools. It is possible in South Carolina to get a master's in library science almost completely by distance education, and urging these people to start on this road will certainly be one of our suggestions. What would YOU suggest that we include in our workshop? Your suggestions will be much appreciated.
