LM_NET 09/30/99: No Subject

I go into classrooms.  First of all, I ask what they think is the meaning
of Banned Books Week.  We discuss that.  I ask them if they know what the
First Amendments says.  I have an overhead with the First Amendment on it.
We then discuss relavent words--banned, challenged, academic freedom,etc.

I tell them about the Materials Review committee and what a person does if
they object to some material.

Lastly, I divide them into small groups, and give each a childrens book.
I ask them as a group to read the book and tell what they thought was
objectionable.  These are books that are in the Banned Book Kit.  I then
read them the information on why each of the books were banned or
challenged.  The students are usually pretty interested.  If time, we also
talk about the Internet and why people want to ban items.  Michele
