From: Doyle_Tony <tdoyle@MUHSD.K12.CA.US> 10 11:27:33 1999 Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1999 10:30:43 -0500 Subject: Re: TECH (remote control of workstations on LAN) From: Karen Rinke <krinke@saint-johns.net> What is needed is a broadcast utility, not a remote control software. LANSchool is one example. It allows a single workstation to broadcast its screen to other computers on the network. During the broadcast the student stations are disabled- they have no choice but to watch. The program also allows you to look in on individual stations and monitor student work. There is also a lockdown function that allows you to disable the student stations without broadcasting. The program is not perfect. For example certain graphics in Power Point do not broadcast, nor does the slide show. I haven't called tech support yet so I don't know if the problem is on our system (doubtful) or in the program. However, installation was a breeze. The program runs on the server so workstation setup takes only a few moments. There is a free trial which runs through December available at the LANSchool web site (www.LANSchool.com). I will be putting it htrough its paces next week for freshman orientatin. -- Tony Doyle, Librarian Livingston HS, Livingston, CA tdoyle@muhsd.k12.ca.us =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law. Actually, we are opening a second site with Kdg only the first year, then adding a grade each year until it is a full K-6 with two sections of each grade. At least for the first couple of years, I will be overseeing whatever is done for the library in the new building in addition to what I am already doing now. As you can imagine, I have many questions about how this is going to work and what I should do to make the start of this new library go smoothly. I don't know yet what kind of budget I will have for books or furnishings. My current library is not automated yet, but that is also on my agenda. Yikes! I want to choose a system that would allow me to administer both sites and allow for easy sharing of resources between buildings. I am also trying to figure out how many books I should order to build a core collection for the new school (remembering that I will only have Kdg there for the first year). I would appreciate any suggestions from those who have been in similar situations. What pitfalls should I be watching for?
