Thanks to all who came through with complete and helpful answers.  I
have been asked to post a hit so here goes:

Thanks to Karen Couch who got me detailed information, despite a
non-working FAX on my side.  She used the American Decades CD from Gale
Research.

Sharon Shockey suggested a new (2nd edition) book from Greyhouse Press,
called Value of the Dollar.  The price is $100/$90 at Amazon.com (have
ordered it to fill gap in my cvollection)

Georgannz Krumlinde sent me a web site address for finding the
historical value of a dollar between the years 1913-1998:

Other suggestions:  New York Times Microfilm (or any other major
newspaper), Microfilm of Business Week or other newsmagazines,
