Last year some postings requested information on why people in different cultures eat certain foods. I just got a copy of a new book which looks like it will help the answer that need. It is: Barer-Stein, Thelma. You eat what you are: people, culture and food traditions. Buffalo: Firefly Books, 1999 $35.00 468p ISBN 1-55209-365-4 Summary: Exploration of more than 100 culinary traditions worldwide and how food preference and preparation reveal links with social structure, geography and history. Each country is divided into these sections: domestic life, foods commonly used (further divided into categories like dairy, fruit and veg, etc.), meals and customs, special occasions, cooking methods, and regional specialties. The reading level is definitely HS+. It can be ordered from: Firefly Books (US) Inc. PO Box 1338, Ellicott Station Buffalo, NY 14205 This is a Canadian company with a US subsidiary. Their phone # is: 1-800-387-5085, FAX 1-800-565-6034 There is a full page ad on p. 14 of the 9/1/99 Booklist, and a review on pp.188-189 of the same. -- Carolyn Gierke, Librarian Sweet Home High School 1901 Sweet Home Road Amherst, NY 14228 Phone 716-250-1227 FAX 716-250-1360 cgierke@shs.k12.ny.us =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
